Seven Opening Sequence

 Seven opening sequence: 

Here are my notes on analysing an opening sequence: 

• At the beginning of the title sequence we see some titles fade up on the screen 
• The titles are white on a black backdrop which creates a contrast making them stand out 
• The style of the font looks as if some has been sketching in there notebook, this creates a very personal feeling to the opening sequence 
• Throughout, the opening sequence I noticed that they explored unconventional angels of everyday items making them look sinister and mysterious. e.g a low angel show shot of a book. By using this shot it creates a creepy atmosphere to the sequence 
• After the screen fades the titles dissolve on a black screen 
• The sequence utilises the thriller genre by using low key lighting to create the chiaroscuro effect 
• After this we see an extreme close ups including unconventional items 
• It should be noted that there is a large focus on the hands 
• The next section of the opening sequence shocked me and made me feel comfortable.  This was because in this part of the opening sequence there are a series of fast paced, shots taken from different angels of a man shaving the finger pattern of his fingers. This extreme close up makes the viewer confused into why this is happening?
• There is a cut away to an extreme close up 
• The different angels allow the audience to decipher what is happening 
• After this we see a shot of a unidentified man writing with a pen. Two clips are editing and played over each h other to suggest that there is a passing of time. 
• This makes me as a watcher believe that this mysterious man has been planning this deed for quite some time
• Next we see a graphic match cut of a film strip and then printed images. 
• However, the hands remain the centre of attention 
• The scissors become an action code for violence especially as they are used in an  experience and skilled way
• We see in a close up shot the word God being cut out of an American dollar which could represent the theme of religion, perhaps the devil is involved in this deed  
• The aim of the sound throughout the seven sequence is to create tension and enhance the atmosphere
• There are not lyrics in this sequence which creates more of an atmosphere and keeps the focus on the action in the shots 
• Something else that I noticed was that the narrative was not illustrated and no clues were revealed throughout the first 4 minutes of the movie. However, the theme and genre of the opening sequence was clearly displayed setting up the mood for the audience.
